Just like any group out there, homeschooled families and their kids have this stigma wrapped around them. Some people think that the homeschooled kids are not socialized, that the parents must be to lazy to get their kids on the bus in the morning, that they are under-educated, that they sleep all day, that the kids play all day long, etc.
It’s easy for outsiders to think a certain way about homeschoolers and their kids. I mean a lot of people just don’t know what homeschooling is REALLY like. I can’t blame them. Before I started homeschooling I wasn’t sure what to expect either. So here it is! Here is the shocking truth about homeschool kids! Are you ready?
*They are VERY social! This one really shocks a lot of people! How is it that children that are educated at home have any social skills!? How is that even possible? Truth be told my son is way more social than I ever was in public school. Also all of the other homeschool children that I have met are the exact same way. They are out going and quick to make new friends. Homeschoolers get out of the house a lot! At least we do. We go to the park, play dates, the library, the grocery store, the post office… you get it! Homeschool kids have tons of opportunity to meet new people and make steady friendships.
*They are free spirited! They are very creative and free spirited. I know lots of public school kids that are free spirited so I’m not saying one is better than the other. However, my child gets to be his fun silly self all day long! He doesn’t have any teachers telling him what to think, what to do, how to act, etc. He gets to be HIMSELF and think for HIMSELF! That is empowering!
*They are well educated! Contrary to what some people believe, homeschool kids get an excellent education. They are taught one on one and can usually move quicker through subjects because of this. Because of this one on one teaching that homeschooled kids get, they have a chance to fully master each and every subject. They don’t just get lost in the crowd or just get by from memorizing facts just to pass a test. Most colleges know this and they welcome homeschoolers into their university with open arms!
I’m not here to say that homeschooled kids are any better than public school kids, but I am here to say that they are just the same as any other kid! I know that is surprising to a lot of people. We are normal and so are our children. The experiences might be a little bit different, but all in all kids are kids! They are fun, out going, and a little silly! :)
