How to finally tell family and friends that you will be homeschooling.
So, you’ve decided to homeschool your children and the only thing left to do is tell your family and friends.
I know it’s an intimidating thought/task because you really don’t know how they will respond. Will they support you, try to change your mind, or maybe they will think you’ve really gone crazy.

I have some easy tips to follow to make your announcement a bit easier. After all, you don’t want to end up in an argument, do you?
- Research and research some more! No, I’m not talking about researching homeschooling. I mean research things to say, things that might come up, other people’s experiences, etc. This will arm you with easy and quick comebacks to those who might oppose you so that you are not caught off guard. It will also allow you to figure out common genuine concern and questions they might arise.
- Role Play – Practice a few of the scenarios mentioned above with a friend or spouse. This might sound silly, but don’t skip this. It will help you get your point across in a graceful manner.
- That brings me to the last step – Be patient and kind. Most people don’t understand what homeschooling is about. If you can get your point across in a kind and confident manner, then your message will be better received. If you find that the conversation is going south rather quickly, change the subject. Have a fall back subject on hand for these types of situations. There is no point in getting into a heated debate. In most cases, people will come around when they see the results of your hard work homeschooling your kids.
Deciding to homeschool should be an exciting time for you and your family. It’s a new adventure that will take you on an amazing journey with your children. Make your announcement just as exciting and a little more stress free by doing your research, practicing your conversation, and by being kind in response to genuine concerns.
