Strengthen Emergent Readers with Your First Grade Curriculum

Created On: September 20, 2021  |  Updated: February 4, 2022  |

I’m not sure why, but I’ve always loved first grade! I think that it is partly because firsties are learning to read and it’s the best thing. I love seeing their excitement when they read for the first time. And don’t even get me started on how excited I get when they find a favorite book. (Be still my heart).

So with all of that being said, first grade is heavily focused on all things reading.

First grade involves reading a TON, writing beginning stories, all while strengthening and practicing fluency when reading. The great thing is that there are so many interactive reading activities that first graders will love.

Strengthen Emergent Readers with Your First Grade Curriculum

So let’s get started!

Make Predictions

Such an important part of building upon reading comprehension is the ability to make predictions. Making predictions is the perfect strategy for emerging readers. This is such a simple activity! During your next read aloud, ask students what they think will happen next. You can even use an anchor chart to create prediction visuals along with I think… because.. statements.

Five Finger Retell

During a read aloud, ask your student the five-finger retell. This includes, characters, setting, beginning, middle and the end! Have an open conversation with your kiddo about the story. It’s such a great form of engagement as well as reading comprehension.

Reading Out Loud

Once your student is comfortable, let them read to you! I love this as a way for emergent readers to gain confidence in their reading abilities, while also reinforcing and practicing fluency. This is also so fun to do if you have any of the jumbo read alouds! Young learners will love feeling like they are capable of reading out loud. Take the time to also practice modeling how to hold a book, read from left to right, and turn the pages.

Choosing the Right Curriculum

I get it, there are so many curriculum options out there? But how do you choose one that is the best for your emerging reader and provides the best hands-on instruction, while also being low-prep for you? I struggled to find one, so I decided to create my own! My first grade curriculum provides seamless instruction, with simple, yet engaging activities.

This curriculum focuses on things like vocabulary, spelling, handwriting, telling time, fiction vs. nonfiction literature, supporting the main idea and SO much more.
