Be a good example yourself
When it comes to raising thankful children, it’s best if you’re a good example yourself. Be as thankful as possible, especially when your kids are around. It’s amazing to think how closely your children are watching you.
Teach your kids to say thank you
Although it seems generic, teaching your kids to say thank you is important. Thank you goes a long way and makes the giver feel appreciated. Teach your kids that it is no fun to feel unappreciated, which is why saying a basic thank you is important.
Talk your child through scenarios
Sometimes, it’s not that children are ungrateful, they are just not sure how to act. It is okay to go through scenarios with your child, just in case. Pretend as though they’re at their birthday party and someone gives them a present (it might be one they don’t even like). Teaching them to be polite and thankful that someone came is important. They may need you to walk them through that scenario.
Expose your child to those less fortunate than them
In today’s world, a lot of kids have everything they could imagine and more. However, not every child has that luxury. Talk to your child about kids who may have less than them. Allow your child to help-out at soup kitchens with you. You can even do service days with your child where they help serve someone else. Pick something your child would love though, this will make it more meaningful. Maybe your child loves pets, you could both volunteer at an animal shelter.
Try to teach sincerity
When it comes to thankfulness, sincerity is always best. Some kids are just born to be more sensitive to others and they naturally have a more thankful heart. Other children, it takes many hours and experiences of showing/teaching them how to be thankful!
Let them be kids
Sometimes kids are just being kids and don’t stop to say thank you. You can always stop and remind your child to be thoughtful and say thank you! However, don’t get caught up in freaking out on your child every time they do not say thank you! While you want to raise a thankful kid, you don’t want them to be fearful of you because they did not say thank you or show thankfulness.
Most kids grow up with a thankful heart because that’s how they were raised. Don’t worry too much about it. Try to show thankfulness to your kids and in return they will do the same. Always remind your kids to say thank you, no matter what.
