Have you ever taken a good long look around your house and wondered “Where did this mess come from?”.
Let’s face it, as homeschooling parents we have a lot on our plates already. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve walked into the kitchen and seen a jar of peanut butter, a bottle of ketchup, and a mangled loaf of bread strewn across the counter top! Did I mention that I had just spent an hour cleaning the entire kitchen? *sigh*
I know I’m not alone, so I’ve created some simple rules that will help keep your home clean once and for all! Ready? Let’s get to it!
- Dishes! Flylady anyone? There is something magical that happens when you have a clean sink. People in your house take notice and they are going to want to help you keep that sink clean. So step 1 here is to catch up on all of your dishes. Step 2 is to shine that sink and make it pretty! Step 3 is to keep the dishwasher empty of the clean dishes so that it can receive dirty dishes throughout the day. Easy right? Don’t worry, do it for a week or so and it becomes second nature!
- Assign daily chores to each member of the family. Take a look around and make a list of the things that get out of hand quickly. Then divide those tasks up to each family member.Ex. Dad: Check garbage every night and take out when full (kitchen, bathroom, and office)
Kid #1: After everyone has brushed their teeth at night, wipe down the bathroom countertop
Kid #2: At the end of the day go through the house and pick up any stray shoes laying around and put away. It’s amazing how those simple daily tasks add up to keep your home tidy. Give each person 1-3 tasks that are to be repeated everyday so that it becomes a habit for them. - Do at least one load of laundry a day from start to finish. Throw it in the wash as soon as you wake up and set the alarm on your phone to remind yourself to switch it over to the dryer. We often become so busy during the day that we miss the buzzer on the machine. Get the kids involved in picking up the clean laundry every day. Do this daily and it will become a habit and you will never have to worry about a mountain of laundry again.
As a homeshcooling family you are going to have little people home for the majority of the day. Use this to your advantage instead of having this become something that allows chaos in your home.
Keep your sink clean, your dishwasher available for dirty dishes, tally out tasks, and keep that laundry under control by doing at least one load a day. Print out the worksheet and chore cards below to get started.
