How To Teach The Alphabet To Preschool Kids

Created On: May 22, 2019  |  Updated: May 19, 2022  |

I get a lot of questions about how to teach the alphabet to preschoolers. It’s usually one of the first tasks that we teach our children.

I remember singing the ABC song to my son over and over way before he could even speak. LOL!

I know a lot children have difficulty or struggles when you try to teach the alphabet to them. It’s okay and totally normal. Not all children will pick up the ABC’s just by singing a song. I’ll show you some other ideas on how to teach the alphabet below.

HOW TO TEACH THE ALPHABET TO PRESCHOOL KIDS

How to teach your child to recognize the letters of the alphabet.

There are lots of fun games that you can play to help your child learn the letters of the alphabet. Check out this fun Goldilocks and the Three Bears printable coloring game. Children will get to practice recognizing each letter one page a time at their own pace. Click here for this free alphabet printable.

Be sure to check out this post on fun hands on alphabet games.

Creating DIY Alphabet Books

This is a super fun activity that will help children relate a word to a picture. Kids to get learn their alphabet as they cut, color, and paste their way to creating their very own alphabet books. You can save and use these alphabet books over and over again. Click here for the free alphabet book printable.

Here is a list of some more free alphabet printables from around the web.

Videos To Teach The Alphabet

There are tons of great videos on youtube that help children learn the alphabet. I’ve also really enjoyed the Prepschool Prep Series videos on how teaching ABC’s. It reinforces the image of each letter and the name of each letter.

You can find the Meet The Letters video on youtube as well:

It’s also important to make sure children can distinguish uppercase letters from the lower case letters. This can be done by doing simple letter match worksheets like this one. Learning the differences is easier when taught right from the start.

Reading Books

Reading alphabet books is a great way to practice repetition to help your children along. Here are a few of my favorite alphabet books.

  • Eating The Alphabet
  • Harold’s ABC’s
