If you are homeschooling your child through high school, you could be doing him a disservice if you do not allow technology to be used. No, it’s not the way you attended high school. In fact, our current high schoolers are facing a revolution in higher education. It’s up to us to make sure they’re equipped to handle it. Consider the following reasons to work technology into your homeschool.
- We (parents) were not being punished when we were in high school. Yes, we had to go to the library, use a card catalog and wait for materials we needed to come via the post office. But, we were working at full capacity at this time! Nothing was withheld from us for the simple reason that our parents did not learn that way. Are you doing this with your child? If you had had a smart phone when you were 15 how would you study? What would you deem important to memorize?
- Have you ever had a second opinion? Whether you get a second opinion on car repairs or dental work – you question things, right? And, that saves you money and future headaches when done right, right? Consider whether it’s important your child memorizes facts over learning how to find good facts. Would you hire an architect who relied on his memory when building your dream astronomy tower? The reality is, people, especially people in 2015, double check their information. No sane person who wants to keep a job relies on what they learned in high school!
- What is the ultimate goal for your high schooler? College is NOT the answer for everyone no matter what you hear on the news. There is an enormous demand for kids who consider jobs as: electricians, contractors, welders, drivers, hair stylists and plumbers. Ignoring these options – particularly if you have a teen who despises school for the sake of school – is a mistake. Be clear (you and your teen) about what you want as the ultimate outcome.
Do you use technology in your homeschool? I’d love to hear about it in comments!
