Are you wondering if a homeschool co-op is right for you? These simple tips can help you decide just that!
Before getting into the details, it’s important to talk about what a homeschool co-op is.
What is a homeschool co-op?
First off let’s discuss what a homeschooling co-op is. Homeschooling co-ops are usually created by individuals and families. The goal of a co-op is to bring students together and learn different skills. The benefits of joining a homeschool co-op are that your child might learn some skills that you might not be teaching at home. Some examples of these are art, music, mechanics, etc. This also gives you a support system and other like-minded adults to share your ideas and homeschooling goals with.

Know the homeschool co-op’s rules!
Most co-ops are very strict and require that you participate in almost all of the activities they have. Be sure you know all of the co-op’s rules and guidelines BEFORE you sign up. This can save everyone a lot of time. You want to be sure that the co-op is a good fit for your family and your schedule. Some co-ops will meet only once a month and others might meet once a week or more.
Get Involved!
It’s always nice if you can contribute something to the group. Can you volunteer some time to the group? Bring snacks? Clean up? Watching younger kids? Teach a skill? Get involved and get to know the members of the co-op.
I wouldn’t recommend joining more than one or two co-ops at the most. They are a lot of work, but can have lots of benefits for your child and can even allow you the opportunity to “sneak” in some adult time. ;)
How do you start a co-op?
Maybe you don’t have one in your area but are interested in starting one. This can happen easily with just doing a little planning!
If you’re wanting to start a co-op, planning is key. See if anyone else in your area is interested in starting one before you plan it out. The more people that you can have to help, the better success you’re going to have.
What are the benefits of a co-op?
There are actually many. Parents love the idea that they’re surrounded themselves and their children with other people who think and act the same. You can also rest easy knowing that you’re being involved with other parents who want to be actively involved in their child’s education.
Find a local homeschool co-op!
If you are interested in joining a co-op you can search for them by state here in the state resource database. Also, ask around and see if anyone in the area is familiar with any homeschooling co-ops. Check on Facebook. Search “(your city) homeschool co-op” and see if you get any results. If you have looked far and wide and cannot find one, then you might consider starting one yourself.
