How does Home Schooling Impact the Family?

Created On: March 4, 2016  |  Updated: October 19, 2021  |

The Homeschooling Family Unit

Some decades back, home schooling wasn’t considered to be a proper way to educate a kid. There was a widespread misconception that only children with limited mental abilities would be home schooled as they were unable to keep up with the rigid curriculum set by public or private institutions.

How does homeschooling impact the family unit? Find out here!

What are the effects of home schooling on families?

The decision to opt for home schooling differs for every homeschooling family – it can be because parents don’t have too much faith in public schools or their children are being bullied in school and succumbing to peer pressure. Take a look:

  • Home schooling helps to strengthen the bond of being a compact family unit. This mode of teaching children allows them to grow up in familiar, comfortable surroundings where they are protected from toxic influences.
  • At times, when parents forcibly push their kids into the public school system against their will, it can have a negative impact by creating a distance between the parents and children. Home schooling offers a suitable option where children can interact with parents without their learning process being affected in any way.
  • It is a collaborative project that involves the whole family – everyone contributes to its success in their own way. It helps parents to connect with their children when they approach them as friends – watch an education program together, go to the library, teach them how to identify plants in the backyard etc.

Current state of home schooling

In 2005, a survey conducted by the National Center For Education Statistics revealed that more than 1 million children have opted for home schooling, and those numbers have grown in leaps and bounds in the following years. Thankfully home schooling is now recognized and legal in states, so as a parent, you can rest assured that by selecting this mode of education, you are not depriving your child of anything they might have learned outside. Even though the concept was initially practiced by Christians, the situation has changed drastically with people from different walks of life are choosing this technique. There is an interesting and eclectic mix of individuals forming a home schooling community of sorts these days with varied religious, social and economic backgrounds, but with a common goal that unites them – providing the best possible education for their kid so they can grow up into strong, confident individuals and be ready to face the challenges that life throws at them.

Parents offer guidance and protection, which are two of the most important qualities needed for all round education, and home schooling is one of the ideal ways to do so.
