Fraction Plates

Created On: April 3, 2018  |  Updated: October 19, 2021  |

Got some paper plates lying around, and want a fun way to teach equivalent fractions, comparing and ordering fractions, or simple recognition and labeling of fractions? This craft idea will be perfect!

Fraction Plates Craft by The Relaxed Homeschool

Paper Plate Fractions

The best thing about this craft is that it uses items you probably already have at home. So grab these things and get ready to begin.

Supplies Needed:

  • 5 large paper plates
  • 5 different colors of craft paint
  • 5 foam paint brushes
  • black Sharpie marker
  • Scissors

Your kiddos could probably manage this one by themselves, but it’s so much fun, you’ll want to participate too! Just keep your surface protected with a newspaper and have your children wear art smocks in case some stray paint or Sharpie marker lands off-target.

Directions:

1. Lay out a couple sheets of old newspaper before you get started.

2. Paint each plate a different color and let dry (or use a hair dryer for a faster dry time).

3. Cut the following:

  • Keep one plate whole and set aside.
  • Cut one plate in half

  • Cut one plate in quarters by folding the plate in half twice then cutting along those lines.

4. Write the fraction on each coordinating plate and place them onto the whole plate to see how many fractions you can use to make a whole.
