Chemistry Curriculum
Chemistry is subject that really requires hands on experience to help fully understand. It can be tricky to find just the right curriculum that will allow hands on learning and it’s one of those things that I get asked about a lot.
I have gone through a few “chemistry” sets from other stores and I have been less than pleased with the quality of the sets. Most of the items in the sets were plastic and the projects given were not appealing at all. I actually feel the same about those boxed science kits… so hard to find good quality products anymore.
I was given the opportunity to try out the chemistry sets from Mel Science. Now as you might have noticed, I don’t review just any product on my website. As you might have noticed I rarely do reviews and this is mainly because I have to really believe in the product 100% and give a stamp of approval before I can recommend it to anyone.
After checking out their site I was really intrigued with this product. First off, please note this is a monthly subscription box, but after one year the subscription ends and you complete the course. So think of it as a full year of curriculum that will be sent to you on a monthly basis.
With your first month you get a starter kit. This starter kit has to be the highest quality kit that I have come across. The beaker is made of heat resistant glass and all of the other items in the starter kit are just as high quality. Gone are the days of plastic beakers and makeshift cardboard cut-outs!
Here is a peak into the starter kit and there are 2 sets of quality goggles. One for the child and one for the assisting adult.
(Off to the right is a sturdy white tray to do your experiments on)
The experiments come in their own little boxes. These boxes include everything that you will need to complete each experiment up to 3 times. I really love this especially if you are looking to do each experiment with multiple children.
Here is a peak inside one of the boxes.
You have the cards that tell you exactly how to perform each experiment, PLUS you download the Mel Science App onto your phone or tablet to watch the actual experiment before you begin. It also explains the chemical reactions and the “why’s” of the experiments.
Here is a quick video of us performing one of the experiments.
We did 3 experiments over all and I am very pleased with the results! This is defiantly one of those products that your kids will get excited about! My kiddo is almost 7 years old and he enjoyed this set very much. I think that this would be a good fit for the little kids all the way up to high school. Kids at the high school age will learn more about the periodic table and different compounds and interactions. There is just so much to learn with these kits!
If you have been searching far and wide for an easy way to add chemistry to homeschool, then definatly check out Mel Science!
