5 Things Homeschool Moms Will Not Admit

Created On: February 17, 2017  |  Updated: October 19, 2021  |

There are lots of myths and speculations that go along with being a homeschool family. It’s hard to be out with your kids during school hours without someone asking why they are not in school. Sometimes homeschool Moms will just keep their homeschool experience to themselves to avoid any controversy. Although, I am happy to report that homeschooling is becoming extremely popular and more accepted today than it was 10 years ago.

Homeschool Mom's usually won't admit these!

Here are some things most homeschool Moms would like you to know:

#1 It’s exhausting, yet very rewarding. We want to show the positive side of homeschooling to the world. The fact is that sometimes it can be exhausting! The higher the grade your child is in and the number of children you are homeschooling will determine your exhaustion level. I’m slightly kidding, but the older the children are the more work that needs to be done. All in all, it is still very rewarding and SO worth it!

#2 Please don’t quiz the children! I know a lot of people write me and ask me about this. Honestly there isn’t much you can do when family members, friends, or even total strangers want to quiz your child. Somehow I guess they have an assumption of what they “should” know. Homescholing isn’t about keeping up with public school kids though. It’s about taking the time to learn at your children’s own pace. Whether that be slower than average or quicker than average. Homeschooling isn’t a race and it certainly isn’t about testing.

#3 We love hanging out with our kids! Yep! While everyone is doing the happy dance that their kids are going back to school, we are doing the happy dance that they are NOT leaving the house. I for one love hanging out with my kiddo and being the main influence in his life.

#4 We don’t sit around playing board games all day! Okay, this goes without saying for some, but not so much for others. We are actually teaching our children most of the day. Even if we are not sitting around the kitchen table doing “formal” lessons, we are still learning. I read a comment once that went something like this “Homeschool Mom’s are just too lazy to get up early to get the kids on the bus… so they homeschool”. WOW! Okay, that is pretty funny. Let’s go back to #1 here. Homeschooling can be a lot of work! Enough said. LOL!

#5 We don’t all hate the public school system! I know some homeschool families really dislike the system, but many of us really have nothing against the public school system at all. I for one have no issues with public school at all. I don’t look down at anyone who sends their children to public school nor do I think I am better than them. Most homeschoolers will agree here. No judging here. Do what works for your family!

So there you have it! The top 5 things that most people don’t know about homeschool families. What would you add to this list?
