I get a lot of questions on how to meet other homeschoolers. Especially from those that live in small towns or towns where homeschooling isn’t popluar. I hope this post helps you meet some people in the homeschooling world!
*Local Organizations
Most larger towns have multiple homeschool groups. Surf the internet and see what each group is about. Don’t hesitate to email leaders of groups that might fit your needs. Try to attend a meeting involving parents only and a play-day kind of get together to get a true feel for the group. Be sure to get information from people you really enjoy spending time with, even if you do not intend spending more time with the homeschool group.
*Local Observations
Make it a point to visit local parks and attractions during non-school hours. It’s not uncommon to run into other families doing the same thing. Suck up your courage and ask them if they are homeschoolers. If they are, set up a park day or other activity. It’s an introvert mom’s nightmare, but you can actually meet some great friends this way.
*Virtually
If you live somewhere remote and local homechoolers are rare OR if you have tried the local route and not had much luck, try the internet. There are lots of homeschool message boards out there. It’s a way to connect with other adults and to find solutions to everyday problems. Don’t tell everything about yourself or your kids. Hang out, get to know the characters. Join in if you feel comfortable. It might take months or years, but you will likely find people that you like who live within a reasonable distance from you. Go ahead and try a meeting and see how it goes!
*Grandmas
Your mom or your mother-in-law for sure talk about you and your kids and they meet other grandmas. Smile and nod and go ahead and meet Ethel’s wonderful daughter-in-law while she’s in town. Honestly, the fact that you and Ethel’s DIL both homeschool is a big strike in your favor.
*Get Out and About
Attend library programs. Grocery shop in the middle of the day. Visit lots of parks and trails. You WILL run into people who are obviously homeschooling. (Clue – one or more of their kids may be wearing pajama pants, tutu’s or hip waders) Speak up, introduce yourself and your kids.
